How To Change Trigger On Ar 15

Upgrading your AR's trigger is the simplest and most impactful change you can make to your AR. I'thousand using a Ascent Ammunition drop-in assembly.

Upgrading your trigger is the virtually impactful change you tin brand to your AR. There are all kinds of cool furniture upgrades, scopes, sights, etc. Only if you want to be more authentic and shoot better, then trigger work is the thing to do–and it's non that plush. A drop-in trigger assembly is easy to install and tin be done at home with a screwdriver and a little oil.

Cull a Trigger

A drop-in trigger is fully contained in a machined housing. The RA-140 comes with anti-walk pins.

Many manufacturers offering drop-in trigger assemblies. You tin can pick and choose features and weights. Await for things like singe- or 2-stage triggers, the weight of pull, and the shape of the bow (curved, flat, roller). I'll show y'all how to do this using a trigger from Rise Armament, the RA-140 Flat Super Sporting Trigger, which they sent me for review. It's a good option, with a mild price-tag (MSRP $139) and information technology'due south a significant upgrade to the mil-spec trigger assembly I had before.

The RA-140 includes anti-walk pins, and whatever trigger yous choose is going to need them, also, so exist sure to buy them or get them included. I'll explain why below.

i. Remove the Upper Receiver

Articulate the gun and remove the upper receiver. It's simple to do and may not require a tool. First, with the left side of the weapon upward, push the takedown pin through, and then tilt the upper frontwards and push the pin pin through. Both of these pins are kept in place with a detent and won't autumn out.

Commencement, push the takedown pin through, and then tilt the upper frontward and push the pivot pin through. Don't worry, the pins won't fall out.

With the upper removed, you can see the trigger hammer. It's cocked in this motion-picture show–don't permit information technology slam forward against the commodities release.

2. Remove the Grip and Safety Switch

Now, look up inside the grip from underneath and you'll meet a hex-head screw–it'south probably a 3/16″ hex. Remove this screw, and don't lose the washer.

Use a iii/16″ Allen wrench and remove the screw from inside the grip. Yours probably has a washer, too.

Separate the grip from the lower receiver, but be careful not to lose the spring and detent that are on the correct side of the weapon. The detent keeps the rubber switch in position, and the leap allows it to click back and along.

Remove the grip, but don't lose the spring and detent on the correct side of the weapon. These go on the safety switch in position.

The rubber spring and detent are modest–don't lose them!

Now merely pull the safe switch out.

Now the condom switch comes out freely.

3. Button the Trigger Pins Out

With the left side of the weapon up, push the trigger pins through. These are a lilliputian stiff at first, simply they don't take too much force. You tin can employ a punch to push them or a screwdriver, or fifty-fifty a pencil with a broken atomic number 82.

Now push the two trigger pins through from the left side to the right side.

You lot've got to push from left to right because the pins are held in identify by grooves which the trigger spring is gear up into. Earlier y'all terminate pushing the pins through, put your thumb over the trigger associates to keep it from flight apart when you remove the pins. Remove the mil-spec trigger assembly.

The trigger spring sets into those grooves on the pins.

Put your thumb over the trigger assembly to keep it from flight across the room when you remove the pins.

This Is Why Yous Demand Anti-Walk Pins

Those grooves on the trigger pins take a spring gear up confronting them and that tension keeps the pins from falling out of the receiver. With a driblet-in assembly, there isn't a leap pushing confronting those pins to proceed them in place, just their tight fit inside the gun. Anti-walk pins have screws that cap the ends of the pins to go on them in identify.

Leap tension keeps the mil-spec pins from moving, only there is no tension with a drib-in associates. Make certain you go Anti-Walk pins with your drib-in trigger.

4. Drop-in and Pivot the New Trigger

Now you lot but need to drop in the new trigger associates and pin it in identify. Have a moment to clean the housing of any dust and excess oil. The trigger assembly may fit pretty tightly. My Sun Devil Mfg. receiver is machined from an aluminum barracks, and it'south precisely shaped. The trigger assembly is also machined to a precise fit, and I had to add a little oil and coax it with light tapping to get information technology lined up so I could insert the trigger pins. It may be a little easier on stamped receivers, and accept care with polymer receivers. But, the trigger fits snugly and there is no play between the receiver and the trigger assembly.

Drop in the trigger associates and pin it in identify. Y'all may demand to add a footling oil to and apply some lite tapping to get the associates to line up.

This is the new driblet-in trigger installed. Information technology's a tight fit, equally it should exist.

5. Install the Anti-Walk Pins

Call back to use the screws to proceed the trigger pins from walking out. The screws are simply caps, and they overhang on both sides of the pins so they go one mode or the other. They practise not tighten against the receiver, and that's normal–they shouldn't employ any squeezing pressure to the receiver.

Install the screws in the anti-walk pins.

Utilize ii wrenches to tighten both sides at the same time and annotation that the screws don't tighten against the trunk of the receiver. My trigger included the wrenches.

6. Replace the Safety and Grip

Put the rubber detent back within the right side of the weapon and see how information technology keeps the safety switch in place. Press it down flush with the hole for the switch and put the switch in place. Make sure the switch is either in the Rubber or Burn down position so the detent will line up.

Now put the spring dorsum into the hole in the grip and line it upward with the detent pigsty. Put the grip back in place and secure with the grip screw.

Put the leap back in the grip and line information technology up to fit back into the detent pigsty. Secure the grip back in place with the grip spiral.

Just put the upper back on and you're all set up.

Go Shoot!

The new trigger should be lighter and tighter and you lot need to get used to information technology. Become out at that place and start shooting. I bet your groups are tighter and y'all're more precise overall. At just three.5 pounds, I like the experience of this new Ascension Armament trigger, and I'll have a consummate review for you lot soon. Whatever you lot choose, your new trigger should be a big improvement over the 7-10 pound mil-spec trigger associates and, every bit mentioned, it'south the best upgrade you can brand for your rifle!
