I've always intended to re-cover and re-upholster it merely it'due south taken me a while to get around to it. This was the week!

Materials Used – Reupholstering an Antique Dining Room Chair:

  • Old dining chair with padded seat, back and arm rests.
  • Upholstery Cloth (mine was an Art Deco pattern bought online)
  • Upholstery Staple Remover and/or Tack Puller
  • Cotton wool padding
  • Old Socks (optional)
  • lx Dust Sandpaper (optional)
  • Staple gun and staples
  • Exacto Knife
  • Upholstery Stud trim
  • Upholstery Hammer
  • Fabric Scissors

The first thing I did in my quest to reupholster my dining chair was to remove the onetime fabric by prying out the nails and staples.

I have a good staple remover but it withal took me some fourth dimension as they'd been in in that location awhile!

I followed the advice in some other upholstery tutorial on this site that says information technology is all-time do to save the old textile as you take information technology off so yous tin can utilise it as a pattern piece for your chair.

If y'all retrieve about it, somebody ages and ages ago already did the measuring and calculating of how big that slice of cloth should be and how to cutting out the corners – so it makes sense to just trace the quondam slice of fabric when cutting your new cloth!

I as well removed the one-time padding at this point.

Footstep 2: Armrests

When I stripped the material off of the armrests of this old chair I discovered that at that place were wooden blocks fastened to the arms of this chair that seem to have been added later it was made.

They were probably added the last time it was recovered in the 1950s – most likely by my Grandfather!

The previous material on the armrests was well worn on the corners from these wood pieces so I decided to sand down the corners of these abrupt rectangular blocks of wood with 60 Dust sandpaper.

Step 3: New Padding

New 'creative' padding for the Armrests

I knew before I started this project that I wanted some additional cushioning on the armrests as they always felt a bit difficult to me – that will accept been that hard wooden block underneath!

I did staple on some new padding but it still didn't seem 'cushy' enough so I added in some former (but freshly washed!) socks.

I cut the socks into rectangular pieces that fit around the wooden blocks. Turns out they were just the correct size for what I needed!

I put another layer of the cotton padding on top of the socks.

For the chair and seat back I went ahead and removed the former padding and replaced it with new cotton padding. I went every bit thick as I felt I could get with it and concluded up calculation a couple of layers.

I stapled information technology in place post-obit the existing staple line for the quondam seat padding.

When all the padding was secured in place I cutting off the excess padding effectually the edges with an exacto knife (craft knife in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland).

Footstep iv: Re-Upholstering the Chair and Seat Back

Fine art Deco Upholstery Material

I chose a bold blue and white art deco fabric. My apartment is mostly greys, teals and blue shades so it fits in well.

I'm based in Vancouver, Canada and I ordered this fabric from Zazzle online.

Yous tin buy the fabric in various weights. I went for Poplin which probably was a touch too sparse. If I was doing it again I would go for combed cotton or linen.

There are similar Art Deco fabrics available on Etsy here as well. If you aren't certain what blazon of upholstery fabric to go for y'all can too bank check out this guide that helps yous choose which upholstery material to use and when.

I wanted to leave the wood as it was rather than paint it equally information technology is in good condition (plus my grandfather was not a fan of painted wooden furniture!).

I decided to pick a really vivid and striking fabric so that information technology even so ended up looking more modern even with the wood finish.

When I beginning started I stapled on the fabric and cut of the excess as with the padding however that acquired the fabric to pull. And then then I started to fold the edge under and and so staple information technology to the frame.

I stapled into the same spots/lines that the previous staples were located.

Tip: Be conscientious to line upward the fabric and place staples at the mid lines on each side first and then staple along the edges.

Step 5: Calculation Decorative Trim

Once you have your upholstery fabric secured you will nevertheless take a visible staple line so this needs to exist covered with some trim.

In that location are lots of dissimilar varieties on the market place – I went with the hammered stud style trim.

These studs come up in a long roll. Every 4th or fifth stud has whole in it and you also get a pile of loose studs with sharp nails on the stop. These go through the holes and yous hammer the whole strip down just at these points.

The strip of studs cut and curve easily, so they are quick and simple to work with.

You simply measure, cut, place information technology over your staple line and use a hammer to hammer in the studs that have the nails/spikes on them.

Footstep half-dozen: Re-roofing the underside of the chair seat

My concluding step was to re-cover the underside of the chair seat.

I actually decided to add more padding at this signal so I shoved it in from below nether the springs and smoothed information technology out.

I used some of material I had taken off of the chair (a piece that was in the best status) and added it to cover the underside.

I thought this was a little 'added upcycle' and too a style of keeping a flake of the chair's history!
